A Guide for Vegetarians and Vegans

Being a vegetarian or vegan in Bosnia and Herzegovina can be difficult, because the local cuisine is not very familiar with vegetarianism, much less veganism. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, traditional cuisine includes meat, milk, dairy products and eggs in the preparation of almost all dishes and it is really difficult to find a dish that can be eaten by vegetarians and vegans. In BiH, this is perceived as a kind of “imported fashion” and people will try in every way to convince you that it is better for you to eat meat.

However, many visitors from foreign countries, as well as domestic ones, are increasingly looking for this type of restaurant, so the offer is slowly changing and enriching with vegetarian and vegan dishes.

There are not many restaurants in our country that would suit vegetarian, much less vegan needs. Small places have been opened throughout BiH for those who do not eat food of animal origin, and Sarajevo and Banja Luka are leaders.

In addition to vegan and vegetarian restaurants, there are also those that are adapted to vegetarians, i.e. vegans, but in which meat, dairy products and eggs are used in the preparation of other meals. We bring you an overview of restaurants in BiH where you can eat a vegetarian or vegan meal.
