Drežnica, heaven on earth located between Čabulja and Čvrsnica

If you love untouched nature, endless green landscapes bordered by white-gray rocks of mountain peaks, numerous springs, a river whose crystal-clear water tempts you to bend down and drink…, head for Drežnica. Somewhere halfway between Jablanica and Mostar, you will be greeted by the Branilaca Drežnice Bridge and from there it will take you five minutes to reach Donja Drežnica, while you will drive to Gornja Drežnica for about 20 minutes on a solid paved road.

The picturesque village is in the canyon of Drežanka, the right tributary of the Neretva River, between two large mountains, Čabulja from the south and Čvrsnica from the north. Along the river Drežanka, which is adorned with natural whirlpools and waterfalls, there is an abundance of various types of fish and beautiful bathing spots.

Veliki Movran

Halfway between Donja and Gornja Drežnica, on the southern slopes of Čvrsnica, there is Veliki Movran, a waterfall that appears a day or two after heavy rains in the area. Those who know the area say that it is the highest waterfall in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and among the highest ones in Europe. According to many, it is 584 meters high, its starting point is 1,383 meters above sea level, and its final point is at 799.

Drežanka also has many tributaries, the most important of which are Ješevac, Mošćenuša, Laloša, Meomača, Ledenica, Tisno, Gračanica and Ždilac, and among the many natural springs, the Balin vir, Mujića vir, Stupina, Mali and Veliki zelenak and Crna stupina stand out.

Drežnica has fantastic conditions for camping, and for those who want sport climbing, there is Drežnica Rock. The settlement of Lisičine, the hamlet of Pašići, is particularly beautiful.

Friendly hosts will welcome you and treat you to cold spring water and coffee, and for lovers of delicious grilled fish, there is a pond with a garden nearby, which is still under construction, where guests can sit, rest and have lunch. According to the last population census, Drežnica had 2,600 inhabitants, Pasan Pinjić, one of the residents, said for faktor.ba.

He adds that many work abroad, but also that many are employed in Mostar. Drežnica owes its specific climate to its interesting geographical location. It is located at the meeting point of the continental climate of the north (Bosnian side) and the much warmer and milder climate of the south (Herzegovinian side).

Numerous tourists

According to Pinjić, this climate is suitable for growing different types of fruits and vegetables.

– Everything grows well with vegetables here, including cereals. As for fruit, we are known for figs, grapes, cherries, pomegranates – adds Pinjić.

He boasts that every year Gornja Drežnica is visited by more and more tourists, both local and foreign.

– A few days ago, we hosted a group of people from Split, and today we also have Czechs here. This is an authentic environment that not many people can boast of, clean water, air, land, not a very common sight. In two years, the construction of a motel for those who do not like camping is planned. This is perhaps an opportunity to invite Bosnians and Herzegovinians to come and see what natural beauty is, to get to know their homeland. You can also take a vacation here; it doesn’t always have to be the sea – said Pinjić at the end of the conversation.
