A unique complex of salt lakes in the center of Tuzla

In many respects, our country is unique in the region, Europe, and even the world. It is the only one in the world, for example, that has a waterfall in the center of a city, the only one in Europe that has a mosque built on a river island… But we also have a complex of salt lakes in the center of a city, the only one in Europe.

The Pannonian Lakes complex in Tuzla is a project that has revived Tuzla tourism. In the past 21 years, the salt lakes have recorded around six million visits, and this summer, thanks to the large number of sunny days, the Pannonian lakes are the chosen destination of hundreds of thousands of visitors!

Health Center

What makes the Pannonian Lakes unique are the pebble beaches that meet the high standards of the Blue Flag, with a capacity of 15,000 people. The safety of bathers on the lakes is raised to the highest level through the constant presence of rescue teams, as well as ambulances with medical teams.

By coming to this place, you will touch a piece of history. When, several million years ago, the Pannonian Sea receded, deposits of rock salt and salt water remained under Tuzla. Thanks to the “heritage” of the sea, local experts “brought” the salt water to the surface and turned it into lakes. The water in these three lakes of different sizes and depths, brings health and pleasure to our bodies.

If you want to know what it’s really like to breathe fully, head to Salt Falls, an open-air inhalation health center. At the five-cascade installation with two pools, inhale saltwater vapors, relieve headaches, do a favor to the respiratory organs or reduce stress. For a complete atmosphere, there is a massage with water falling from the waterfalls. The share of salt water in the total water volume is 30 percent, with constant seawater salinity.

There is also an outdoor fitness center on the lakes, so with 30 professional exercise machines you can stay in shape even on vacation. The complex has a children’s amusement park arranged according to international standards.

If your summer vacation is not complete without water slides, the Pannonian lakes have two fun water slides! And if you want to learn something and find out more about the history of Tuzla, there is the Archaeological Park – the Neolithic settlement of Sojenica and the Geological Museum.

Highest recognition

Bearing all this in mind, it is not surprising that the City of Tuzla and the Pannonian Lakes won the second UNWTO ULYSSES AWARD in 2012, the highest recognition of the UN World Tourism Organization for the project “Valorization of Natural Heritage – Pannonian Salt Lakes in Tuzla”.

All of these are reasons enough to head to Tuzla and visit these unique salt lakes and set aside part of your vacation to enjoy the salty oasis. Tuzla will certainly impress you with its rich entertainment program and concert activities, the programs of numerous cultural institutions, as well as the catering facilities that the old Tuzla bazaar abounds in. You can find out more about all these contents on the website of the Tourist Board of the City of Tuzla www.tztz.ba as well as on their accounts on social networks.
