One of the most beautiful mountains in the region: As many days in a year, that many springs on Treskavica

Treskavica Mountain is located 30 kilometers from Sarajevo and offers unique opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and alpinism. With its height of 2,088 meters above sea level, it is the highest mountain in Sarajevo and only 300 meters lower than the highest peak in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Maglić.

The mountain lakes, as well as the stark contrasts between lush vegetation and complete nakedness, make Treskavica one of the most beautiful mountains in the region.

The Great Lake

According to legend, Treskavica has as many as 365 springs, including the springs of five major rivers, Željeznice, Bistrica, Ljuta, Bijela and Rakitnica. There are also Platno, Crno, Bijelo and Zmijsko, Turov stan, Kućare, Trokunsko, Gornja bara i Simovića bara.

The first five lakes are located above 1,500 meters above the sea level and represent the most prominent traces of ice age on this mountain, and the largest and most beautiful is Veliko jezero (The Great Lake), 220 meters long, 185 meters wide and six meters deep. This pearl of nature is located at an altitude of 1,548 meters.

The crystal clear lake water and pristine surroundings offer unforgettable moments, especially in the summer days when the view extends all the way to Montenegro and the Adriatic Sea.

Treskavica is a mountain that offers one of the most beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. It offers an unforgettable view of the nearby mountains Jahorina, Trebević, Bjelašnica and Igman. There are also mountains Obalj, Visočica, Crvanj, Zelengora, Maglić, Volujak, and in the distance, you can see Velež, Prenj, Čvrsnica and Vranica.

The climate in Treskavica is a real mountain, with the southern, Mediterranean, and northern currents coming from the continent colliding above. All this causes frequent changes of weather so that four seasons can be experienced in one day on Treskavica.

Endemic species

No Bosnian mountain shows such sharp and characteristic differences between the lush green vegetation (on the north side) and the karst wildlife and the goleta (on the southern slopes) as Treskavica does. It is known for its endemic species, the Bosnian lily, and once herds of chamois were an inevitable sight on Treskavica, while today there are fewer of them.

For all those who want to visit this beauty, the most convenient access to it is from the village Turovi, four kilometers away from Trnovo. The road from the village is marked and it is safest to follow the trail that leads to the mountain hut and the camp Sustavac. The road from Sustavac leads to the Great Lake next to the former mountain hut Josip Sigmund on Kozja Luka, and slowly becomes more complex and narrower.

The second approach is from the mountain hut “Vrela” located in the Tušila area, in the village of Sinanovići. The third approach is from the village of Rakitnica, via Baletinske vode and it takes three to 3.5 hours to climb the highest peak of Mala Ćaba (2,088 meters).
