In addition to many other sights, Travnik is also known for its unique clocks. Traveling into the past, the clock towers stand upright and proud as guardians of the past time.
One is in Upper Bazaar, right next to its faithful companion Hadži Ali-bey’s Mosque, near the former Konak, from which Bosnia was governed for 150 years during the time of the viziers and the Ottoman Empire.
The other near the oldest Varoš Street dominates Lower Bazaar, on the plateau, the famous Travnik Musala, below the medieval Bosnian fortress Old Town. Did you know that Travnik is the only town in Bosnia and Herzegovina that has two clock towers?
Returning to the Upper Bazaar and the Hadži Ali Bey’s Mosque, embedded in its southwestern wall there is a unique “alaturca” sundial, the only one of its kind until you visit Istanbul. Just a few hundred meters away, across the river Lašva, there is another unique clock. On the bell tower of the church of St. Alojzije Gonzaga, which is an integral part of the second oldest archbishop’s high school in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Since last year, Travnik is richer for two more sundials in the Old Town, which on a clear and sunny day accurately show the time of both “alaturca” and “alafranca”.
This summer, Travnik is adorned with a unique flower clock in the central city park. It is the newest tourist attraction along with the famous, partly renewed, the Travnica Promenade, which is already attracting the attention of many curious visitors and tourists.
Welcome to Travnik, among other things, the city of unique clocks.
