Tourist Potential of the Municipality of Jablanica: Clean Rivers, Beautiful Lakes, and Untouched Mountains

The Municipality of Jablanica boasts excellent natural conditions for tourism development, highlighted by Jablaničko and Grabovičko lakes; the Prenj and Čvrsnica mountains; and the Neretva, Doljanka, and Šanica rivers. The Doljanka and Šanica rivers are ideal for sport fishing and camping, while Prenj and Čvrsnica, both rising above 2,000 meters, present a challenge for hikers and adrenaline enthusiasts alike, offering activities such as climbing, ski touring, and mountain biking.

Grabovičko Lake and the Neretva River also offer opportunities for angling and kayaking. On the northwestern slopes of Čvrsnica lies the Blidinje Nature Park, much of which falls within Jablanica’s administrative boundaries. The park already features a ski resort with individual and group accommodation facilities.

Number of Visitors

The rich biodiversity of Risovac and Blidinje spans from Mediterranean to high-mountain flora. Blidinje Nature Park is home to numerous endemic species, including fungi and the Bosnian pine, which forms the largest such complex in Europe. Notable natural heritage sites within Jablanica include the Prenj Gorge, Hajdučka Vrata (a designated natural monument), the Perutac Spring, and the Mliništa Spring.

Many travel writers have pointed out what distinguishes Jablanica from other parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina: its indescribable natural beauty, simplicity, peaceful atmosphere, welcoming residents, and the uniqueness of its traditional Herzegovinian stone houses.

The Via Dinarica is an adventurous hiking and trekking route that spans seven countries across the Dinaric Alps. Its main trail, the “White Trail,” passes through Jablanica, linking the Prenj and Čvrsnica mountains.

Jablanica is also rich in cultural and historical heritage, featuring numerous monuments declared National Cultural Monuments by the Commission. Among them is the “Battle for the Wounded on the Neretva” complex, which includes a museum and four necropolises with stećak tombstones. One of the most significant, the Dugo Polje necropolis in Blidinje, with 150 stećak, is included on UNESCO’s Tentative List for World Heritage designation.

From the Metal Age, Jablanica features ancient hillforts such as Stuparina–Dragan Selo, Gradište–Ostrožac, Križ–Jablanica, Glogošnica, and Mrakovo. From the Roman period, there are remains of villae rusticae on four sites in Ostrožac, along with architectural fragments and gravestones. From late antiquity and the Middle Ages, notable sites include the administrative fortress town between Ribići and Ostrožac, the tower of Herceg Stjepan Vukčić Kosača from 1441 on Borovac, and the Gradac fort at the confluence of the Rama River.

The “Battle of the Neretva” memorial was once a prominent tourist destination for visitors from the former Yugoslavia and Europe. Its centerpiece is the iconic “Destroyed Bridge,” dedicated to the battle to rescue the wounded. The complex attracts more than 15,000 registered visitors annually, with many more unregistered, making it a valuable cultural asset for future development.

Hotel Park

Of Jablanica’s 43 necropolises, the four most renowned, located in Risovac and Sovići, form an integral part of the municipality’s tourism offering. Proximity to the Adriatic Sea, its position between Sarajevo and Mostar, and closeness to Međugorje provide strong potential for transit tourism, as well as for establishing a niche tourism corridor across northern Herzegovina, in cooperation with the municipalities of Prozor-Rama and Konjic.

Exploring all that Jablanica has to offer cannot be done in a single day. For an extended stay, Hotel Park is recommended. Located in central Jablanica, close to the Sarajevo–Mostar regional road, the hotel has been completely renovated and redesigned. It now features modern amenities and enhanced spaces tailored to accommodate a wide variety of guest profiles, allowing each visitor to find their own special corner.

Particular attention was paid to interior modernization, with designated zones for enjoying drinks, a rich wine selection, or warm beverages in the city café, enhanced by fresh air from the neighboring park. The à la carte restaurant offers a culinary surprise, with dishes from both local and continental cuisines.

The redesign also included the spa center, which now features a saltwater pool and sauna, along with spacious conference facilities.

Hotel Park has become not only a hub for tourists but also a gathering place for local events and community initiatives. Its role has been pivotal in positioning Jablanica as a serious tourism destination, with an emphasis on strong cooperation with the local community.

With a continuous focus on improving service quality and enhancing its offerings, the hotel contributes significantly to Jablanica’s appeal as a tourist hub. Hotel Park attracts a diverse range of guests, from business travelers to nature and heritage enthusiasts. Guests can also take advantage of organized excursions to explore the rich natural surroundings of Jablanica and its broader region.
